Career Development Reflection

In the film NURSES If Florence Could See Us Now the nurse’s exemplified flexibility and innovation when caring for patient’s and problem-solving. The nurse’s also exemplified care and compassion when caring for their patients. One of the nurse’s also taught a student about caring for their patient as if they were one of their loved ones. I have learned in class about the flexibility that is needed and how to care for patient’s however I feel as though I can learn further with experience how to connect better with patients and care for them as if they are a loved one of mine. I feel as though with experience I can also learn to become more flexible and innovative.

In the film a population that was featured was the Native Americans and the nurses were speaking about culture and about how many believe and practice prayer as healing. I have not had the opportunity to care for a patient who has had these beliefs. I feel as though a barrier could be the difference in beliefs. As nurses and healthcare providers we help people get better with the use of technology and medicine however, with these patients we have to accept their wishes. The nurses also mentioned caring for the patient but also caring for their families. I would like to learn more about different cultures and beliefs to better care for patients of different religions and cultures than my own.  From the film I also learned that I need to advocate for myself before I can advocate for my patients which I think is also important to learn and use in my career as a nurse especially now.

I believe I can set myself apart from other applicants by providing the individualized experiences I have had. I also will be sure to mention the organization’s mission and how I relate to the mission and can help achieve goals they have. I will describe my strengths gained from the UNE Nursing Program by outlining the knowledge I have learned through clinical, SIM lab, and VR activities throughout my education. I also, can outline the group work I have done with my peers and the knowledge I have gained by linking in my ePortfolio due to it containing much of my work. I can show extra knowledge I have gained by outlining the different certifications I have earned throughout my education. Through all these experiences I believe it will show my communication with others professionally. I can describe ways where I can improve and provide ways that I plan to improve them. I can also provide challenges that I have come into contact with and how I overcame them. I think addressing your weaknesses is also important because it shows that you have not mastered everything but that you can recognize that and are willing to put in the work to become better.

Thank you, Alexis, for sharing how the nurses in the movie have inspired you to reflect on our own practice and identify areas in which you already demonstrate strength as well as those where there is room for improvement – which is to be expected at this point in your career! Upholding patient autonomy is not only an ethical imperative in nursing, but as reinforced by our guest speakers from the AG’s office, it is a legal imperative as well. You seem to have a solid understanding of that! It sounds like you have a good plan for how to “sell” yourself during your interviews, I wish you the best during this exciting process. Great work!
