Gratitude and Self-Care

Gratitude is important in a professional setting because it shows that people are appreciative of your actions.  Sometimes the actions we perform as nurses don’t receive recognition or gratitude and it can feel as though what you did wasn’t important.  Gratitude among coworkers is also important because you’re all working together to meet the same goal and acknowledging their help towards that goal is important.  Members of an interprofessional team can thank one another with a simple “thank you” in passing or even leaving a quick thank you note if they helped you.  They can also show gratitude by helping the other out next time when they need it.  Self-Care is also important so when I’m stressed I manage it by going on a run or doing something that I enjoy to take a break.

Some strategies I use to decompress are I workout or do something that I enjoy to take my mind off of things.  I normally would go walk by the water or sit by the water to clear my mind and take a break.  In a professional setting I would most likely wait until after work to workout but if I had a break I could go for a quick walk to clear my mind.  It is important to decompress when needed because it is part of self-care and if you don’t decompress it can become too much over time.
