Another important quality of a nurse that often gets overlooked in popular culture is their compassion and listening skills. People assume that nurses just carry out tasks and go through the motions but nurses do more than that. They carry out every action with the patient’s well being in mind and they listen to the patient in times of need and they listen to them to carry out the tasks in a way the patient is comfortable with. The nurse shows compassion everyday on the job and acts as a counselor for the patient often. Most TV shows and movies show the nurse carrying out their daily duties and sometimes show them having conversations and showing compassion during those conversations but don’t usually go into depth. In movies/TV shows the nurse is usually talking to other healthcare staff while in patient’s rooms rather than fully focusing on the patient. I think the job of a nurse while hard it is rewarding and that all the duties even if they are not idealized they are important and will be just as rewarding. An image showing a nurse communicationg and listening while holding the patient’s hand could be a good image to represent these qualities.
